Crocheting is one of the oldest needlework arts. To crochet means to form yarn or thread into a fabric using a hook. Its name comes from the French word croche, meaning “hook.” The crochet hook was one of many tools first used to make delicate lace. As time went on, more stitches and designs came into being, and crocheting became a separate art. Crocheting appeals to many people because it can be used to make a variety of creations, such as scarves, caps, vests, sweaters, purses, belts, lace, doilies, tablecloths, afghans, pillow covers, and bedspreads.

Whether you’re looking to create an interesting texture or eye-catching color patterning, the crochet V stitch might be just what you have in mind. It’s a simple stitch to learn and it can be a very effective design element. The repeating V’s create an openwork pattern with graphic appeal. Worked all in the same color, crochet V-stitch has lovely texture, and changing colors from row to row creates a powerful design.

This pattern allows for any size yarn as well as any size crochet hook. This is an open pattern that is quick and easy to assemble. Just follow these instructions:

Tips For How To Make Crochet V Stitch

  • Add a row of trim or tassels to each end of the scarf.
  • When finished, stitch around the entire scarf with different colors of yarn and with a variety of trim, if desired.
  • To make a shell trim: sc, skip 2 stitches, 5 dc in the next stitch to make a shell, skip 2 stitches and repeat.
  • To make an open shell trim: sc, skip 2 stitches, (chain one, dc, chain one, dc, chain one, dc, chain one to make an open shell) in the next stitch, skip 2 stitches and repeat.
  • A skinny scarf can be made with three v-stitches instead of four.
  • Try variations of the v-stitch. Skip two chains (instead of one) in the first row.
  • dc, chain 3, dc
  • 2 dc, chain 2, 2dc

It depends. For most beginners, the process will be long while you learn the stitches and get comfortable with holding the hook and yarn. Like anything, practice makes perfect. The more you do, the faster you’ll get.
